<< The Before
Wave erosion, running water erosion, and ice flows are
major problems in our waterways. The erosion process
creates some of the most dramatic changes to our
landscape and the loss of personal property. The ice
flows cause similar damage.
Erosion and ice flows can become critical safety
issues and property maintenance problems when storms are severe,
wind gusts are prevalent, and water levels become high.
If the shore, river bank, or embankment is left
unprotected, erosion can undermine the banks and wash
out the shore lines. Ice flows can crush or rip apart
waterfront structures. Structural alternatives such as
bulkheads (seawalls), retaining walls, revetments
(riprap), breakwaters, and groins may be the solution
for you problem. Alternatives that are less permanent
to help minimize the rate of erosion and associated
damage include revegetation, beach building, bluff
drainage, slope regrading, and relocation of existing
structures.
