Seawalls
Erosion - Ice Flows - Damage

Wave erosion, running water erosion and ice flows are major problems in our waterways. The erosion process creates some of the most dramatic changes to our landscape and the loss of personal property. The ice flows cause similar damage. Erosion and ice flows can become critical safety issues and property maintenance problems when storms are severe, wind gusts are prevalent and water levels become high.

Solutions

If the shore, river bank, or embankment is left unprotected, erosion can undermine the banks or rip apart waterfront structures. Structural alternatives such as bulkheads (seawalls), retaining walls and riprap may be the solution for your problem. Alternatives that are less permanent to help minimize the rate of erosion and associated damage include revegetation, beach building, bluff drainage, slope regrading and relocation of existing structures.
